I was still a virgin at the time, and I lost my virginity on the film on my 16th birthday. Uh... So I was getting a very, very fast education into sexuality.

And my mom was there [on set] with me. My dad was there the first month and then my mom came in. And my mom was very, very open and we had a lot of discussions about it. And it was a quick education.

It was a different time. So, it was a little more understandable, so to speak, back then where everybody was kind of coming off the 60s, where it was free love and everything else. And so it kind of, it was the tail end of the 70s. So, it was, again, it was kind of understood. And again, Europeans- Americans are very tight when it comes to sexuality. Europeans are incredibly open. If any of you have ever spent time in Europe, it's very free. It's not as emotional as we are in America. It's very kind of, "Hey, let's get together and let's have sex." And America was like, "Oh no, we can't do that." But there in Europe it was very, "Hey, let's just have a good time." And I think that's- If you look at the films from that era, it sparks to it. Whereas in America we were still kind of very, very conservative, so to speak, compared to the rest of the world- Or most of the world. Or compared to Europe, anyway.

“This was an interesting scene. There was a scene that was cut, where she [his mom] looks at me as I turn over, she is staring at my body, naked. And the camera panned up to my private parts - which is NOT easy to look at when you’re looking at dailies and seeing it on a big huge screen. And it panned up my whole body. And Vittorio Storaro the DP was not comfortable with showing an adolescent’s genitalia, and so the first time we shot it he underlit it so that it wouldn’t show up… and Bernardo got REALLY angry with him and made us do it again! I remember my mom thanking Vittorio for at least trying. It didn’t obviously wind up in the movie cos I think back then you couldn’t really show… It was one of those things that Bernardo wanted to do and if he could get away with [showing] it, then he could. But it really was her looking at him growing into manhood. [Joe seen on screen sleeping naked from a distance] There it is, there was one little naked shot, but there was, during that time, there was a very slow-moving camera that went up my body.”

1h 26m 50s, Joe’s mom masturbates him.

“This is the famous masturbation scene, where all the controversy came in. And during this particular scene Jill [Clayburgh, the actress playing his mom] was a little uncomfortable and kept on “doing it” on the side. Bernardo literally came over, put his hand on me and was like “no, Jill, like THIS”. And I’m like “wow, OK…”

[Joe sucks on his mother’s chest] This was Bernardo, Bernardo always has, if you look at all his films including The Last Emperor, he always has somebody suckling on their mother’s breast. Going back to the beginning. And this was Joe’s way and her way of going back to the beginning.
