In 2024, Sarah Grappin spoke to L'Obs about “the close relationship she had with director Alain Corneau, whom she met in 1994”, when she was just 16 and he was already 52. The actress recounts how the shooting of Le Nouveau Monde, her first film in which she was directed by Alain Corneau, gave rise to a real bond between them.
She tells that she was kissed for the first time by the director during the making of the film. Referring to a scene in which her character had to kiss her boyfriend, Sarah Grappin explains: “The cue was to eat his tonsils. And that's exactly what he (Alain Corneau) had just done to me.” This relationship, “peppered with rapes”, lasted a year and a half, she says, recounting how Alain Corneau would show up with her in cafés, at the cinema and in restaurants. “He calls me on the landline. My parents think it's weird, but they're flattered (...) He kisses me full on the lips in front of the Librairie de Paris or in the metro, and even then, why doesn't anyone intervene? I'm 16 and he's 52, so it's obviously a vertical relationship,” she complains.
