In a 2010 interview, asked if his son Mario was excited or weirded out about the opening sex scene, Melvin Van Peebles said, "He didn't want the kids at school to see him doing that. You know kids, I told him not to worry about it, shut the fuck up and do what I say. Now, every time he gets a broad he says, 'Hey honey, come and watch me in this movie.'[...] What I found very interesting, is that people couldn't believe I used my own son. Everybody's somebody's kid. If it was so wrong, why would I do it with somebody else's kid?"
