Director Imanol Uribe said the filming has been very hard for 9-years-old Noelia Ortega, playing Paula, especially in the scenes she shot naked near the river during one of the hardest winters that is remembered in Palencia. "We were one or two degrees below zero, next to a river. We had to protect the little girl with a cream all over its body. Even so, one suffers when shooting a sequence of those characteristics. The girl behaved wonderfully," he recalled.

When Imanol Uribe was asked about the impact of the opening scene - in which a close-up panorama of a 9-year-old girl's naked corpse appears - the director states that everything in the film is cold and contained except for that scene. "In cinema it is very difficult to synthesize the sensations and I needed from the first moment a shocking scene to justify the horror felt by the policeman. It is not a gratuitous scene, it is essential to understand his mental process. In cinema it's not enough to say things, you also have to see them".
